On Sunday afternoon the Bromfield girls' soccer team trounced the Blackstone Valley Beavers 7-2 to advance to the semifinals of the Central Mass. Division 3 District Tournament.
The Trojans were able to fend off an early scare when Brianna McMullen hammered home an early goal off a corner kick, to give the Beavers a 1-nil advantage just four minutes into the match. Bromfield would equalize five minutes later when Rylee Osgood baited the goalkeeper off her line, and tapped the ball in the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.
"The first ten minutes or so was scary for us. Said Bromfield head coach Gary Wenger. Their team really capitalized on their opportunities. It took us a while to go into gear. Having the goals scored us definitely galvanized the girls."
Blackstone Valley came back down the other side of the pitch, and scored on a crisp pass from Lauren Frain to Madyson Christian with 28:00 left in the half to put the Beavers back out in front 2-1. Bromfield pushed Moriah Arnold back on the front-line of defense, and the strategy worked to perfection.
A handball in the 18-yard box by a Blackstone Valley defender set up a penalty kick for set-piece specialist, Lizzie Rooney. Rooney lifted the ball past Blackstone Valley goalkeeper, Danielle Michalak top shelf to tie the game
Six-minutes later, Osgood capped off her first-half hat trick with another display of fancy footwork on a one-on-one with Michalak to give the Trojans a 4-2 lead in the 30th minute. Osgood's golden boot provided two more goals before the halftime whistle sounded with an unassisted tally in the 39th minute, and a splendid goal off the volley from a cross delivered by Clara Wang in the 40th. Bromfield took a 6-2 lead into the intermission.
Senior defender Emma Hall made the most of the chance she had in the 77th minute when she beat Michalak low left-side to cap off the game's scoring at 7-2. Bromfield will play the winner of Douglas and St. Bernard's on Tuesday at a neutral playing site yet to be determined.
