HARVARD -- The boat launch at the town beach on Bare Hill Pond will be soon be closed to allow storm water drainage improvement work to begin, so anybody whose boat is racked there should get moving. Now.

That was the urgent warning Selectman Bill Johnson delivered Monday night.

Citing a likely deadline date of Oct. 15, Johnson issued a public alert during the recent selectmen's meeting: Get all boats off the beach, please, including kayaks and canoes stacked in the boat rack. The message was clear: No exceptions and the sooner the better.

A notice is posted at the beach and on the town common, and the Pond Committee plans to send out "colorful postcards" to abutters, he said, adding that the Parks and Recreation Commission has already sent out notices to people who rent rack space.

Johnson called for a town-centric media blitz to get the word out.

The boat launch will be off limits to all but the construction crew "as early as Oct. 15," he said, and residents who park their boats there should take them home. Otherwise, the boats will be removed.

Asked for particulars, he said Park and Rec would store them. No word yet on where the boats will be stored or if storage fees will be charged.
