Meet the author: 10 a.m. to noon, Storytime Room. The Townsend Public Library is proud to announce that they have been selected to receive a visit from author/illustrator Brian Lies, as part of the Support for Summer Reading Online grant. Of the 200-plus libraries offering an online program component, the Townsend Public Library was selected as one of 10 libraries statewide to receive a visit from Mr. Lies. Mr. Lies is the illustrator of the 2012 Collaborative Summer Library Program, Dream Big--READ! Massachusetts is one of 49 states using the program and his illustrations can be seen in libraries across the country! Meet the author, ask him questions, and find out how he writes and illustrates his books! Books will be available for purchase at the event. We will be giving away DOOR PRIZES!!! Live Music and Coffee House! Summer Reading Kick-Off at the Townsend Library: 7 to 9 p.m., Meeting Hall A&B. Coffee, tea, hot cocoa, pastries, friends, and, of course, good music! Did you know Bob Dylan and Joan Baez both started out performing at coffeehouses? Cara Brindisi, who will be performing for us here, just might be the next big thing! Cara performs in Worcester and Boston regularly. Her blend of indie-folk and her beautiful voice are not to be missed.

Special band concert to honor Independence Day: Townsend Military Band concert from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.; lawn party starting before the concert hosted by the Townsend Fire/EMS Relief Association. Lots of food and games on the Townsend Common.

Townsend Methodist Church to Host Vacation Bible School

Aug. 6 -10

Townsend United Methodist Church is hosting a Vacation Bible School Monday, Aug. 6, through Friday, August 10, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The curriculum, "Operation Overboard -- Dare To Go Deep With God," will give children an extraordinary adventure filled with fun, excitement, and creative Bible-based activities.

VBS decorations, activities, crafts, skits, games, music and snacks are all part of the week long program. Dive in and discover God's underwater universe! Explore the depths of God's Word at VBS 2012.

The VBS is open to all children of the area ages 4 -12. The cost is $5 for the entire week and pre-registration is requested.

The church is located at 265 Main St. at the corner of Routes 13 and 119 in Townsend Center -- the "meeting house church on the hill."

Townsend Methodist Church Yard Sale, June 23

Townsend United Methodist Church's annual Yard Sale is Saturday, June 23, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be something for everyone -- furniture, household items, books and toys.

The sale is an indoor event and will be held rain or shine. The church is located at 265 Main St., at the corner of routes 13 and 119, in Townsend Center, "the Meetinghouse on the Hill."

This is the time of the year for seasonal cleaning and recycling your no longer needed items. Chairman Marcia MacMaster invites area residents to call the church if you have items to donate.

The old adage holds true: "One man's trash is another's treasure!" Please, no computers, exercise equipment or encyclopedias.

Townsend to host circus

Townsend Recreation has signed a contract with the Kelly Miller Circus for the exhibition of an all new 2012 show. The circus will roll into town on Thursday, July 12. Everyone is invited to come out and watch the animals being unloaded and fed, and the elephants raising the big top. Activities will begin at 7:30 a.m., and the tent will be raised at 9 a.m. Guides will be furnished for anyone attending.

The traditional "old style" circus will present performances at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Support Townsend Recreation. Local businesses will be contacted by the McLaren Advertising Agency, enabling them to purchase discounted children's tickets.

The 2012 season promises to be more exciting than ever with many new acts and entertainers to amazed and amuse you. Come out and enjoy a day of fun filled excitement at the circus.
