TOWNSEND -- A 26-year-old Lunenburg man is being held without bail since his girlfriend told police he assaulted her with a knife, tried to rape her, and choked her until she lost consciousness on Saturday night.
Townsend Police Chief Erving Marshall said in a press release that police were called to the Country Estates Apartments on Turnpike Road in Townsend on Saturday, after the unidentified victim regained consciousness, fled into a bathroom and called 911.
The woman told police her boyfriend, Shawn Carpenter, 26, of 31 Spring Street Extension, in Lunenburg, went to her Townsend apartment Saturday, assaulted her and choked her until she lost consciousness.
The woman later awoke, only to have Carpenter begin choking her again, according to Marshall. At that point, the woman escaped Carpenter's grasp, ran into a bathroom, locked the door and called police.
Lunenburg police and state police found Carpenter at his mother's home in Lunenburg Saturday about 11 p.m.
He is charged with attempted murder, assault with intent to rape, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Carpenter was arraigned Monday in Ayer District Court, where he was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on June 22.
Police did not identify the victim or release information on her condition.
