The National Hockey League is following around some of the people who make hockey run, as part of its new NHL Life series. Their second episode focuses on referee Tom Kowal, and shows us what goes on when referees are in their locker room.
The answer, which may not surprise you, is that there's a bit of shop talk, as Kowal opines to his referee and linesmen about the pace of the game. It's interesting to note how much discussion about possible penalty calls goes on in the locker room, as the officials discuss a non-call during the second period of play.
“The thing you can take away is how hard work it is to be in this profession,” Kowal says.
Kowal was an interesting choice by the NHL. A Calgary native, Kowal was hit hard by last year's floods, which displaced 100,000 Alberta residents. The 13th-year official's basement was flooded, and Kowal provides an interesting perspective.
