AYER - The Ayer-Shirley football team scored 40 points Friday night - and lost by 24 points.

Yeah, it was a wild game against Narragansett, which prevailed 64-40 during a game which exhausted the scoreboard operator.

Ayer-Shirley couldn't contain Joe O'Neill, who ran for 196 yards and scored on runs of 19, 6 and 47 yards.

The host Panthers (2-3) received an outstanding game from quarterback Zak Walker, who completed 14 passes for 223 yards and five touchdowns.

On the ground, Ryan Richards gained 33 yards. Richards also hauled in five passes for 107 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Ayer-Shirley played the visitors even in the first and third quarters, but Narragansett scored 24 points each in the second and fourth quarters.
