REGION -- On Sunday, July 21, the sixth-grade North Central Blaze girls' AAU basketball team culminated its 2013 spring/summer season by taking home the 2013 Bay State Games gold medal, winning the championship in its sixth-grade division against other top AAU and all-star teams from New England.

This Blaze team is a highly competitive local AAU basketball team that competes in the spring/summer and fall seasons against the top teams in all of New England and New York/New Jersey.

During the spring and summer season, the Blaze compiled an impressive 29-12 record against both sixth- and seventh-grade teams. The team is comprised of some of the top travel players from Central Mass. and southern N.H. Current players are from Lunenburg, Acton, Gardner, Winchendon, Brookline N.H., Hudson, Templeton, Townsend and Ashburnham. The head coach is Mike Wilmot, assisted by Jeff Cravedi and George Lison.

Unlike many AAU teams, the key to this Blaze team's success has been the tight-knit dynamic of this group. The girls have become extremely close, both on and off the court.

For a team that's just entering the seventh-grade this fall, these girls are developing the uncanny ability to know exactly what each other is going to do on the court, and it really showed at the Bay State games.
