Mike Powell's bomb triple to deep center field with the swift Matt Brown on base resulted in North Middlesex's final run as they defeated Leominster 9-5 in a Montachusett Senior Babe Ruth tilt.
Powell also had two other hits and two runs scored as he led the offense. Leading the defense was the battery of Kevin Quin and Chris Canning. Quin pitched seven strong innings recording seven strikeouts including the final three Leominster batters. He gave up six hits while walking two. Canning also came up big as he picked off an aggressive runner at second base as Leominster was rallying.
North Middlesex lifted its record to 3-0.
The North Middlesex dugout was highly animated as the boys rooted and kidded themselves all game long. It seemed like contributions were made by everybody.
Nick Barry had a sharp single and he made a good play at third by fielding a tough grounder and then made the long throw across the diamond. Mark Canning made the catch of the game in left field as he angled back, took about ten quick strides, and snagged a ball hit deep into the left centerfield gap by Leominster's Nick Cordio.
Kevin Powell had earlier denied Cordio first base when he cleanly fielded another tough grounder and threw across the diamond in the first inning. Kevin also had an RBI single of his own.
Groton's Johnny Lamont had a leadoff single in the second inning and run scored. Joe Tierney singled in the fourth and then pinch runner Kyle McDermott
On what was a beautiful day for baseball, in front of a good crowd, for two hours, the community gathered together and watched some fine young men enjoy their own company while playing a game that they learned to love -- baseball.
