SHIRLEY -- After an exciting 12-week double-elimination tournament, Bob Steiner emerged victorious by beating Jim Krycka by a combined 2-game score of 656 to 612.
With Bob winning the first game, Jim had to make a strong comeback to win. The result of the second game was a tie, thus Bob wins.
Last week, Bob, who was the winner of the lower bracket (one loss already) defeated Jim who had come to the championship match undefeated. Since this was Jim's first loss, another game was required. This is when Bob won the tournament.
We started with 16 strong players and whittled our way down to the two finalists. Since it was a double-elimination tournament, everyone was allowed to have one bad day and still keep playing. The results were a longer tournament but one where people played longer and enjoyed their matches even more. Many of the matches were very close and all of them were fun for the players and the spectators.
The entire tournament was a huge success and plans are already underway to have another one this fall. We hope to have even more entries and perhaps open it up to seniors in nearby towns.
This could be an exciting fall so stay tuned.
Our thanks to everyone who participated, they made the event. A special thanks to our judge, Don Parker. A large thank you goes to Francis Grey who thought up the idea for the tournament and who managed the action and made it all work.
Thank you to all and congratulations to Bob.
