St. Anthony's Bazaar: Kickoff with the traditional lobster and clam dinners beginning on Friday at 5 p.m. with corn on the cob plus plenty of other food available, including seafood chowder on Friday night and chili on Saturday night, hot dogs, hamburgers and sausages as well as delectable homemade desserts. On Saturday, the culinary feast continues with chicken cooked over the grill accompanied by coleslaw, New England baked beans and rolls. Fun continues with games and challenges for all ages and bargains on new and gently used items for sale. Stop by and choose your bargain. You will not be disappointed.

Special Town Meeting: 7:15 p.m., Ayer Shirley Regional Middle School, to consider article proposed by the Energy Committee.

Article 1. Adopt Performance Contracting

To see if the Town will vote to borrow the sum of $570,873 in order to initiate an energy savings program (Performance Contracting) in Town owned buildings in accordance with MGL Chapter 25A, with the repayment of the borrowing to be made from guaranteed energy saving accumulated during the life of the borrowing and, further, that the Town authorize the Board of Selectmen, pursuant to MGL c.

40, $4 to enter into a contract(s) upon such terms and conditions as the Selectmen deem to be in the best interests of the Town to implement said energy savings program; or take any other action relating thereto.

Article I Adopt Performance Contracting. Explanation: The Energy Committee in conjunction with its Owners Agent and the identified Energy Savings Company, has recommended the adoption of an Energy Saving plan known as performance contracting, covered by MGL Chapter 25A, in which borrowing is initiated to install energy saving devices in Town owned buildings at no additional burden to the taxpayers in Shirley. The work performed will be paid off over the life of the borrowing by the guaranteed energy savings identified in the program.

A two-thirds vote is required for approval of the article as a borrowing source.

Planning Board seeking new member

Shirley is seeking a dedicated individual to serve on the Planning Board. A Full Member's position has recently become vacant. The position will be filled by a joint election of the Board of Selectmen and the Planning Board until the next annual town election, when the position will be on the ballot. The Full Member shall act on all applications to the Planning Board. This individual shall be responsible for becoming familiar with all state and local - regulations governing a Planning Board in order to make determinations based on these laws.

Applicants must be registered voters of the town of Shirley. Mandatory attendance at two evening meetings per month will be required. Any interested applicants are welcome to attend and observe the a meeting. The board will be meeting on July 17 (7 p.m.) and Aug. 14 (7 p.m.) at the Town Offices, Planning Office, second floor, 7 Keady Way.

Planning Board seeks new members to serve on the master plan committee

The Shirley Planning Board currently has five openings to serve on the Master Plan Committee. 

The Planning Board is a volunteer board elected by the town of Shirley. The Master Plan Committee is a volunteer board appointed by the Planning Board. This is an opportunity for individuals to learn more about town government goals and the mandated facets of municipal planning. It is not necessary to have technical training in this area, but a willingness to devote time and effort to learning about our town goals is necessary. Ability to work with many personalities is helpful.
