PEPPERELL -- Donations from more than a dozen town businesses and organizations have funded landscaping on the grounds of Nissitissit Middle School.

Nissitissit head custodian Paul Nixon, who spearheaded the project, said the original shrubs had grown so large they were blocking the windows.

"The plantings were here originally when the school was built and everything just got overgrown," Nixon said.

The project raised $1,450, entirely through donations organized by Pepperell resident Lisa Ferolito.

Ferolito, who has children in the school district, said she saw Nixon removing the existing landscaping this summer. When he said he didn't have a plan to replant it right away, she started calling local businesses to ask for support.

"Pepperell is such a community-oriented town. I knew the folks here would want to help out. Nissitissit Middle School is where our annual Town Meeting takes place so it is more than just the middle school," Ferolito said.

The 36 plants were provided by Mason Brook Nursery, and included hydrangeas, Cyprus and Rose of Sharon.

Mike Ordway, Maureen Vaillancourt and Seamus Caron, of Mason Brook, did the landscaping.

Nixon said the new landscaping was a matter of taking pride in the school.

"I hope it'll look like the newest school in the district again, because I've been here from day one so I think I'm more sensitive to seeing things in decline. We really needed to do something to make it ship-shape," Nixon said.

Nixon also thanked Terry Spaulding from the Pepperell Parks and Recreation Department and Nissitissit custodian Jason Hamilton for their help with the project.
