PEPPERELL -- Shannon Fagan, of Pepperell, will join thousands as she runs the 2013 Falmouth Road Race as part of Tedy's Team, led by former New England Patriots linebacker and stroke survivor Tedy Bruschi.
Fagan, who be running in memory of her late grandparents, Vincent and Madeline Fagan, shares a common goal with her fellow Tedy's Team runners of raising awareness of stroke.
As a nurse and mother of three, Fagan knows that physical activity and eating well are instrumental in keeping your heart healthy. She makes sure that each of her three children plays a sport every season and that television and video games are limited to allow more time for outdoor activities.
"It's important to me that my children stay active and that they learn about healthy lifestyles early on," said Fagan. "They have been playing sports since they were 5 and it's great to see them enjoy playing sports and being active on a regular basis."
Fagan will be running with Tedy's Team in memory of her grandparents, who both suffered from stroke. To show their support, two of Fagan's children recently held a lemonade stand in the 90-degree summer heat, with all proceeds going to Tedy's Team.
On Sunday, Aug. 11, over 50 members of Tedy's Team will be motivated by their stroke heroes when they hit the pavement for the Falmouth Road Race. They will celebrate the passion and inspiration of Tedy's Team, honoring both survivors and the loved ones lost to the regions No. 4 leading cause of death. Consider these statistics:
* About 795,000 Americans each year suffer a new or recurrent stroke. That means on average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds.
* Stroke kills more than 137,000 people a year. That's about one of 18 deaths. On average every four minutes someone dies of stroke.
* With a stroke, time lost is brain lost. Call 911 at the first signs of a stroke, which include slurred speech, confusion or unexplained headaches.
The runners are taking a critical step toward raising awareness of stroke and its warning signs, as well as much needed funds for local research and educational programs.
