GROTON -- If you find yourself thinking, "I can buy that head of lettuce for a dollar less if I go to a supermarket rather than buying it from Farmer Jones," Ben Hewitt will show you a different way of thinking about food, local food, "safe" food, and how it all comes together with how we think about money.
"The Future's in the Dirt" with Vermont author/farmer Hewitt premieres Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Groton-Dunstable Regional High School, 703 Chicopee Row, and is brought to you by Groton Local and Freedom's Way National Heritage Area in celebration of farmers and agriculture's value to the historic character of New England. Hewitt will speak at 3 p.m., with doors opening at 2:30 p.m. "We are ignoring the true price of food if we don't understand what we are doing to ourselves, our health, our relationships, our connections to community," said Hewitt.
He will discuss his books, "The Town that Food Saved: How One Community Found Vitality in Local Food" and "Making Supper Safe: One Man's Quest to Learn the Truth About Food Safety." And more importantly, he will do what he does best -- tell us what he sees as the problem and offer a solution -- with humor.
Hewitt is a born and raised Vermonter who operates a small-scale diversified hill farm with a small herd of beef cows, a few hogs, a pick-your-own blueberry patch and vegetables. He describes it as a "turn of the century Vermont hill farm, but not the most recent turn of the century."
