Kathleen Spofford is a candidate for the town clerk position in Townsend. Kathy has worked in the clerk's office since 2008 as the assistant town clerk. Prior to that, she worked as the administrative assistant in the Board of Health for four years.

Kathy has attended seminars and town clerk conferences to stay current on changes in the laws that affect the clerk's office and its procedures. These educational seminars go into the details of many aspects of a town clerk's duties and provide the opportunity to earn credits toward becoming a certified municipal clerk. Only one-third of the clerks in Massachusetts have their certification and Kathy is three quarters of the way to being certified.

Kathy chose to become a notary to help serve the public and a commissioner to qualify, commissioned by the governor, to swear in notaries and justices of the peace, to make this process more convenient for them.

Kathy is thorough, professional, understanding and thoughtful when communicating in person, by phone or in writing. Frequently, the first place new residents come for information is the clerk's office. We want them to feel welcome in our community and give them as much information as we can.

Kathy knows the position, the four-year cycle of the clerk's office and how to go from one responsibility to the next to ensure everything is done in a timely manner. She has worked the last two presidential elections and many elections and town meetings in-between.

I hope you support Kathy on Monday, April 28, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., with your vote.
