Townsend voters: April 30 will be here before you know it. This year your local elections will be combined with the state's primary election for our state senator to Washington. Your votes are extremely important, so please participate.
Locally in Townsend we have three candidates on the ballot for selectman. April 8 was candidates' night at Town Hall. All three candidates handled themselves very well. There is one candidate that stands out from the rest.
That candidate is Carolyn Smart. Ms. Smart impressed me with her knowledge of how government is supposed to run to benefit all of Townsend's residents, but most importantly, the taxpaying property owners. There needs to be relief on tax rates. I believe Ms. Smart will take control of this most important part of governing.
Townsend citizens, I am sure your current leaders are going to introduce more tax increases in the form of debt exclusions and possibly a bond for North Middlesex School -- both of these are tax increases. Not to mention, the "per thousand" increase that will be coming for the year of 2014. In the last two years, Townsend's increase of property tax combined has been $2.52 per thousand. This is absurd. Townsend is not Boston. I am sure Ms. Smart will help stop this practice.
Now, I ask all of the registered voters to please "be smart" and support the only candidate that will stabilize Townsend's future for all its citizens -- Ms. Carolyn Smart for selectman.
