Font ResizeI'm at a great time in my life. I have a wonderful family with TWO new granddaughters (Yippee!) and a great job. Our problems, I think, are probably pretty much in line with everyone else's.
So riding to the office on June 22 on this general wave of contentedness, imagine my surprise when I approached a corner on Old Ayer Road in Groton and saw a white SUV heading right at me.
The driver was very obviously texting on her cellphone. It was the phone she was looking at, not the road.
As I yanked my steering wheel to the right, so did she -- at the very last moment. Judging by her face, she seemed surprised that there was another car on the road so intent was she on the message she was reading or writing.
Like all of us, I've read and heard a lot about people who text while they drive. Texting drivers are killing people with their inattention to the road.
So it's shocking to me to realize that people are still doing it. Though the seconds before our looming crash were too quick for my life to flash before my eyes, it was that kind of moment.
On top of all the other reasons why we must drive defensively, add another one to the list -- people who don't appear to know that driving a motor vehicle requires actually looking at the road as they drive.
How sad.
So watch out for white SUVs in the Groton-Ayer area. A collision between that vehicle and something -- or someone -- at some point seems inevitable.
