Whether you're invited to a holiday cookie exchange or would like to give gifts of homemade cookies this season, make a bar cookie, easy, sweet and delicious! Enjoyed at a recent party with family and friends, the cookies were baked by Carolyn Grund, of central New York, who graciously shared her recipe.

Hello Dolly Bar Cookies, 2 dozen


1 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs (take about 8 and pulse in a food processor)

1 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1 cup chopped walnuts

1 1/2 cups shredded coconut

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted

1 can sweetened condensed milk

Holiday colored (red, white & green) nonpareils sprinkles


Preheat oven to 350° F. Lightly grease a 9 x 9 inch baking pan. Melt butter in microwave in heatproof bowl and until just melted when stirred. Add graham cracker crumbs, mix then press evenly into the bottom of baking pan.

Next, layer the coconut on top of graham cracker base and drizzle a little of the condensed milk over. Then add chocolate chips and again, drizzle a little condensed milk. Add chopped walnuts and drizzle remaining condensed milk over. Sprinkle top with nonpareils.

Bake in oven 20-25 minutes. Thoroughly cool and then cut into rectangles or squares.

Serve on a vintage silver tray or a festive holiday plate.

Gift package ideas: Place cut squares into mini cupcake liners, then in a box and tie with ribbon or raffia. Print the recipe and tie it on too!
