Harvard police assisted other departments more than once during the week of Aug. 5. The first logged incident during that week was on Tuesday, Aug. 7, just after midnight, when Ayer Police asked for assistance locating a couple of teenage boys reportedly seen throwing rocks in the road. Apparently, a police officer spoke to a young man outside the Ayer courthouse, but it was not clear from the police report if he was one of the suspected culprits or which police department spoke to him. Harvard's involvement with the matter apparently ended at that point.
Another mutual aid call on Thursday night, Aug. 9, came from Bolton police, who asked for assistance locating a fallen tree on Sugar Road in that town. It is unclear if they found it, but in any case, it would be the other town's job to remove it, Detective Izzo said.
Suspicious activity
A canoe rack that was found overturned at the beach Tuesday night probably fell accidentally and was not the result of vandalism, Detective Jack Izzo said. The speculation is that the rack was simply too top-heavy.
On Wednesday, Aug. 8, a call logged at 12:49 a.m. about a suspicious male was linked to a possible past assault at the Exxon station on the Ayer/Harvard town line. The officer's report states that the caller was hesitant about providing information, however, and no suspect was found.
Around noon on Wednesday, the Bromfield School tennis coach called to report having found a hypodermic
A woman on an evening run past Bromfield Wednesday night called to report seeing a white sedan with two male occupants stop near the building, one of whom got out of the car and tried a couple of the school doors. It was the janitor, Detective Izzo said.
Sunset watchers
A red van with four or five young occupants that was parked at the Prospect Hill overlook Thursday evening apparently caused concern. A caller reported that the youths were outside and drunk. They were not, Detective Izzo said. They simply pulled over and got out of the car to watch the sunset, which can be spectacular from Prospect Hill.
Holy Hill visitors
There were two reports of suspicious motor vehicles parked on Holy Hill before dawn Friday morning, Aug. 10, one of which was at the Shaker Cemetery. The first was gone on arrival. Police spoke to the owner of the car parked at the cemetery, who drove off without incident.
A man and woman reportedly having a conversation while standing in the road outside Dunkin' Donuts on Ayer Road Saturday morning, Aug. 11, were gone when police arrived.
On Saturday afternoon, a DPW worker reported having seen a dump truck parked at the school earlier in the day with someone inside. When police checked it out, they found the vehicle's fire extinguisher outside the truck but nobody was around, Detective Izzo said.
General calls
On Saturday afternoon, police assisted the DPW by standing by while a crew fixed a washout on Mass Avenue after heavy rain.
Breaking and entering
Town beach personnel reported Wednesday night that the beach house had been broken into at some time in the past. The police report did not list anything damaged or missing.
Beach theft?
A basketball hoop and stand were reported missing from the floating dock at the Bare Hill Pond swimming area Monday evening. There was no indication in the report as to whether they were believed to have been stolen or may have simply been moved or fell off the float into the water.
Animal control call
A small deer reportedly hit but not killed by a motor vehicle early Thursday morning, Aug. 9, at Stow and Westcott roads was dead when police arrived.
Wires down
A cellphone caller reported Thursday morning that a large tractor-trailer unit whose logo the caller had noted hit and took down telephone and cable wires on Blanchard Road. Verizon and Charter were notified.
Pothole damaged motorcycle
On Friday morning, Aug. 10, a motorcyclist called police to report that he had struck a pothole caused by road construction on Ayer Road and that his bike was badly damaged.
He was advised to call Town Administrator Tim Bragan, who in turn referred him to Ricciardi Construction, which apparently owns the pothole. Fortunately, the man was not injured, but his motorcycle may have been totaled.
Missing canoe
A resident came to the police station Friday afternoon to report that his canoe had gone missing from the town beach. The canoe is off-white with mahogany ribs.
Motor-vehicle accidents
On Friday afternoon, two vehicles collided on Ayer Road. One vehicle was towed and police gave the driver a ride to Ayer. There was no further information Tuesday morning.
A four-car pile-up on Route 2E initiated ambulance calls to Ayer and Littleton as well as Harvard, plus the Harvard Fire Department. The accident was investigated by Mass State Police.
Medical and fire also responded to a Route 2 accident early Saturday morning, which, like most Route 2 accidents, was investigated by Massachusetts State Police.
No personal injury resulted form a single-car crash on Pinnacle Road Sunday morning. The vehicle was found "up against the pole," Detective Jack Izzo said, but he had no information on how it got there. The Fire Department was called out because the vehicle was "leaking fluids," he said. And the police log states it was towed.
Ambulance calls
An ambulance call at 9:34 Sunday morning turned into two calls when the ambulance went to the wrong Littleton Road address first. When the ambulance arrived at the correct location, the patient, an injured skateboarder, refused medical care or transport, Detective Izzo said.
Disturbance
An employee at a Mass Avenue dental office called police Monday afternoon, Aug. 13, to report that a patient who had just left the office might be in some trouble outside. The young woman was sitting in her car with the door open and handout items the dentist gave her scattered on the ground, the caller said, and someone was in the vehicle with her. They appeared to be arguing, but it turned out to be a case of mistaken interpretation. As it turned out, the girl was upset about a personal matter, unrelated to her dental visit, and her boyfriend was comforting her, Detective Izzo said.
Burglary reported
A Woodside Road resident reported late Monday night having seen a man in a white T-shirt enter the garage. The man first rang the doorbell at the home, then went into the garage, the caller stated.
The owner found the trunk of a vehicle parked in the garage open, according to the police report.
A passing vehicle was stopped as a precaution because the driver was wearing a white T-shirt, but it was not the suspect. It was a town EMT, checking out the police call out of curiosity. Although the log lists the incident as a theft, the report does not state anything was reported missing, Detective Jack Izzo said.
