GROTON -- The children and staff of Florence Roche Elementary school participated in a fundraising walk May 10 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Hannah Webb, a fourth-grader at Florence Roche who has Type 1 Diabetes, approached the school about organizing the walk at the end of last year. The school agreed and was on board with support from Principal Hoyt, Assistant Principal Garden, gym teacher Mrs. Starbird and all the teachers.
Two weeks before the walk, a representative from JDRF visited the school and gave a presentation on Type 1 Diabetes. The visit kicked off the fundraising effort.
On the big day, sponsorship forms and donations were returned and the children spent a fun afternoon walking and running around the track. The day was a great success with perfect weather.
The kids had fun listening to popular music and sporting crazy hairstyles, but, importantly, they helped raise money to find a cure for Hannah and other children with Type 1 Diabetes.
According to Andrew Webb, Hannah's father, the total amount raised from this event will be more than $10,000, with 10 percent coming back to the school. "Absolutely amazing," he wrote in an email.
