"There has been a company called "The Volunteer Fireman" soliciting donations from Ayer businesses in the name of the Ayer Fire Department.

"The Ayer Fire Department is not associated with this company and they do not do any solicitations by telephone."

This message from Chief Robert Pedrazzi could easily translate to our other local towns as well.

It has become the practice of our police and fire departments to let the public know if they have authorized fundraisers to call residents.

It doesn't happen often.

Money is too hard to come by these days to hand it off to unscrupulous callers trying to get our hard-earned dollars.

Though we do want to help our local fire and police departments, donating through a third party is seldom a good idea.

If you receive a solicitation, call your local officials FIRST before agreeing to give. They will be more than happy to answer your questions and help you keep you money where it belongs.
