SHIRLEY -- The Hazen Memorial Library is proud to once again be a part of the Massachusetts summer reading program that makes a difference in children's lives. Our main goal was to help children and teens retain and enhance their reading skills during the summer. Another goal was to encourage the adults to model reading for youth. Our program also provided a haven and a fun place for the community of readers that joined us this summer.

Every year our program increases in participants. This was our biggest year yet with over 300 children, teens and adults joining. An overall 12 percent increase from 2013.

We added 17 percent more programs and the attendance for our programs was up 67 percent from last summer, while the Teen program increased 18 percent the adult program increased 105 percent .

I want to congratulate everyone who participated and for the excellent reading that was accomplished. Congratulations to our winners of the weekly prizes: Liliana Pinault, Krista Sebastian, Noah Reed, Julia Sanzio, Alexandria Dupont, Ben Glanville, Nikhil Pratapagiri, Natalie Guilmette, Anton Balish, Samantha Anciello, Zachary Sickorez, and Molly Richardson.

Also congratulations to the Fizz, Boom Read! grand-prize winners: Max Jahn, Annabella Pinault, Ella Reed, Abigail Peckham, Katie Brauckmiller and Kevin Sebastian. Congratulations also to the grand-prize winners for the Teen Spark a Reaction program: Rohit Pratapagiri, Ralph Gifford and Meghan O'Neil.

Once again our summer reading program would not have run smoothly without the help and supervision of Barbara Masiero.

Warmest thanks to the many teen volunteers who helped keep the program running, especially Texas Manning, Niamh McCann, Sreenidhi Chalimadugu, Rohit Pratapagiri and Ken Sebastian.

Thank you to all of the grown-ups who encouraged literacy and drove their children to the library so that they could participate.

Heartfelt thanks to Director Debra Roy, Carol Landers, Susan Cusick and Steven Banks for helping throughout the summer; the team work was extremely important and appreciated.

Most of all I would like to thank all of the children and teens who participated in our program I am so proud of all of your reading! Thank you for spending the summer with me it was my honor and privilege.

The Summer Reading program's goal is to promote reading throughout the summer and to have fun. This would not be possible without the generosity of the Friends of the Hazen Memorial Library and Bemis, Assoc. Inc. who funded the Creatures Teachers program, the Catch the Science Bug program, daily reading prizes, science programs, teen programs, along with the children's and teen grand prizes.

Also without the Friends' hard work and support, none of this would have been possible, not even the explosions. Thank you to all of those who helped to fund these programs; local funding for our summer reading program is provided by Roll-On America and the Trustees of the Hazen Memorial Library while statewide support comes from Massachusetts Library System, Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, the Boston Bruins, Friendly's, Yankee Candle and the Big E.
