AYER -- A new Taco Bell and gas station could be coming to the Ayer rotary, pending approval from local boards.

The Taco Bell restaurant would go in the old KFC building on Sandy Pond Road with drive-thru and sit-down service.

Charter Foods, the Tennessee-based franchisee of the company, has submitted plans to the building inspector and health department for review.

Wayne Ferguson, director of operations at Charter Foods, said they hope to open in 75 days. He said Ayer seemed like a good rural community for a Taco Bell.

"There's not a Taco Bell close," he said. "It'll be a new dining option for the people that live in Ayer along with the people that work in Ayer."

The company also has locations in Haverhill, Lawrence and Danvers.

Lonnie Smith, the architect for the project with LS Design Group, said the building will not be torn down but totally remodeled.

"It should already be zoned for a restaurant, and we're just changing it from one concept to the other," he said.

Smith said the restaurant, designed to seat 54 people, will use the existing parking around the building.

Meanwhile, a preliminary plan for a gas station on the empty lot next to Gervais Ford is making its way to the planning and zoning boards.

Huseiyn Sevincgil, of MHF Design, presented the idea to the Planning Board, explaining that Global Montello Group would buy one part of the empty 2.5-acre parcel owned by Gervais Ford.

The plan would involve a five-island gas station, 3,200-square-foot convenience store with a drive-thru, and a diesel fueling area in the back for larger trucks, he said.

The proposal will go before the Zoning Board for a few variances. Sevincgil said a traffic study is under way.
