HARVARD -- Harvard firefighters and seven other local fire departments battled a three-alarm fire off Ayer Road on Saturday.
The fire that occurred just after midnight left significant damage to the single-family residential house at 50 Ayer Road, said Fire Chief Rick Sicard. No one was in the home at the time.
"It's still up in the air of whether or not the house will be completely gutted or torn down and rebuilt," he said. "That's really up to the insurance company right now."
The fire damaged the basement, first floor and the attic of the home, Sicard said, and where it started has yet to be determined.
He said research into the cause of the fire is not completed, but it appears that it was unintentional. Police logs identify the residence as belonging to the Burns family.
Meanwhile, residents have started a Web page to help the Burnses, accessible at www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/719090.
"They are already overwhelmed by all the incredible support and kindness of friend, co-workers, family and neighbors," the Web page reads.
