TOWNSEND -- Townsend VFW Post 6538 and its Auxiliaries will host the lawn party to be held in conjunction with the Townsend Military Band's Thursday evening, June 26, concert on the Townsend Common.

The aroma of grilled onions and peppers will fill the air as the VFW post members grill hot dogs, hamburgers and sausages to serve to hungry concertgoers. Corn dogs and fried dough will be available for purchase as will a variety of cold soda and bottled water.

A wide selection of homemade cookies, squares, cakes, breads, candies and pies may be purchased from Townsend VFW Ladies Auxiliary members to eat while listening to the concert or to take home to enjoy later.

Food and beverages will be available from 6:45 p.m. until 9:15 p.m.

There will be numerous activities for children at the lawn party including basketball and baseball toss games as well as an opportunity to do sand and spin art crafts, have their face painted and play in the bounce house.

The 2013-2014 Department of Massachusetts Ladies Auxiliary VFW cancer pins will be offered for sale. Proceeds benefit cancer aid and research centers and provide monetary grants to cancer-stricken VFW Ladies Auxiliary members. Townsend Bandstand tiles will also be available for purchase.

Concertgoers of all ages will have an opportunity to win stuffed animals and a patriotic money hat.

The Townsend Military Band will open by playing "Buglers' Dream" by Arnaud and "America.

" Sousa's "Freelance" march, the "Irish Tune (Danny Boy)" arranged by Grainger, Handel's "Water Music Suite" and "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral" by Wagner will be performed. Rossini's "Overture to Italian Girl in Algiers," Osterling's "Beguine for Flutes," "Themes Like Old Times" arranged by Barker and the "Belgian Paratroopers" will be included in the first portion of the concert.

The "Sea Songs" march by Vaughn Williams and Mozart's "The Fake Gardeness" overture will be played following intermission.Townsend Military Band concludes its program at 9:30 p.m. by playing the "Star-Spangled Banner."
