Making purchases at the variety of booths at the Shirley Hoe Down on June 7 is a great way to help many town organizations.
From noon until dusk, the Shirley seniors will be selling baked goods and Trinity Chapel will be selling pies. ShirleyArts! will grill hot dogs and hamburgers while Boy Scout Troop 7 grills sausages. Chicken wraps can be bought from the Town Hall folks with salads and BBQ chicken provided by the Historical Society.
The Cub Scouts will once again be preparing fried dough and the BSA Venture Crew will have freeze pops. One Youth Venture group will have iced tea and chocolate-covered pretzels and another Youth Venture group will have Cold Stone Creamery ice cream. Coffee, ice tea, water, soft drinks and slushies will be available to benefit town organizations.
Other local nonprofits, like the Friends of Hazen Library, will sell cookbooks and library bags. The Conservation Commission will be under the tree with a wonderful selection of plants. The Shirley swim team will sponsor the bouncy house. The ASMS History Club will run the dunk tank. The ASMS Robotics team will sell light bulbs.
The Shirley Playboard will be back with its Cow Chip Bingo.
There will be information booths sponsored by the Recycling Committee, the Trustees of Reservation, Nashoba Nursing and Next Step Living.
A variety of craftspeople will be on hand. There is still room for more nonfood sales tables.
To keep the children entertained, there will be a pie-toss and a tire-toss, and face-painting. There will be gift certificate prizes for the Crazy Hat Parade and Egg Toss winners. Children can come with their own decorated crazy hat or make one at the Hoe Down, before the 3:30 p.m. parade. There will be entertainment all day long while folks are doing their shopping or eating or playing. Some chairs are put out for the audience, but folks are also welcome to bring their own lawn chairs. Look for the Shirley Hoe Down on Facebook to see photos of the event from last year.
