Temperance in Harvard at the Harvard Historical Society May 15

It is 1829. The time has come to rid our town of the evils of arduous spirits, of the demon rum that causes poverty and madness.

You are invited to a meeting to form the Harvard Temperance Society to be held at 7 p.m. on the evening of Thursday, May 15. The meeting will be moderated by the Rev. Alisha Samson and will have notable speakers such as Dr. Eliakim Holman, Reverend Jonas Gilbert, and retailer Calvin Haskell. Unfortunately, the Ezra Wetherbee Tavern is not available so we will meet at the Still River Baptist Church, 215 Still River Road.

The meeting will be followed by conversation and by refreshments that will appeal to both those who will sign the pledge that night and those who may still have to settle with their conscience. Of course the meeting is free, but donations will be appreciated, as they will help us to pursue further meetings of historic import.
