Occupation: Mother, community volunteer and outgoing president of the Friends of the Lawrence Library.
Why do you come to the library? To get books and CDs, for programs for me and my children and to run the Friends of the Library meetings!
What do you geek? Volunteering.
Lawrence Library geeks volunteering, too! Lee Ann has been the president of the Friends of the Lawrence Library for many years, but she is now stepping down to make way for new officers. If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, if you would like to be more involved in your community or if you just really love your library, the Friends encourage you to join them! Even a small amount of volunteer time would be helpful and appreciated.
The Friends of the Lawrence Library is a nonprofit organization that supports the library through volunteer service and fundraising. Their main fundraisers are the annual Book Sale in early spring, the Toy Yard Sale, which will be on Saturday, April 26, on the library front lawn and the annual OctoberFest Wine and Beer Tasting in the fall. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. Stop by to hear about all of the upcoming events at the library, and see how you can make a difference. No registration is necessary and new members are always welcome. Parents of young children, take note: Free babysitting is provided in the Toddler Room!
The work of the Friends has a huge impact on the library. They provide funding for over 20 free and discounted passes to local museums and attractions, all the programs and performers (that aren't grant-funded) for adults and children, all music performances and Art Gallery receptions, our monthly electronic newsletter, over $10,000 for books and other materials in the Children's Room, and so much more.
If you enjoy the children's books, museums passes, arts and crafts, book clubs, free concerts and various other parties and programs, you can thank the Friends! These costs are not included in the town-appropriated library budget. If the Friends did not pay for these things, the library would not be able to provide them, and the total Children's Room annual budget would be only $3,564.
The library can help everyone explore the things they geek. For information, or if you are interested in being the Geek of the Week, stop by Lawrence Library.
