GROTON -- Boy Scout Troop 3 Groton celebrated its 90th anniversary on Tuesday, April 1, with a special dinner celebration at the Union Congregational Church hall.
The Scouts were joined by family, alumni, past adult volunteers and a few special guests to share in this historic occasion. Troop 3 received its inaugural charter from the Boy Scouts of America on April 1, 1924, and has been an integral part of the local community and culture ever since.
The celebration was called to order by the Senior Patrol Leader and Eagle Scout David Fitzpatrick, who led the Scouts in a traditional meeting opening featuring a color guard followed by Junior Assistant Scoutmaster Bryce McLaughlin leading the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.
The potluck meal was provided by troop families and was thoroughly enjoyed by all, especially the boys. After dinner, Troop Committee Chairman Brian Kiley introduced the two guest speakers. State Rep. Sheila Harrington read proclamations from Gov. Deval Patrick and the House of Representatives recognizing the Troop on its anniversary. Selectman Peter Cunningham read a proclamation from the Board of Selectmen declaring April 1, 2014, to be "Troop 3 Day" in Groton.
After the proclamations, Eagle Scout alumnus Matthew Pinque and Scout Warren Callen cut the celebratory cake, decorated with a replica of the commemorative patch that the troop commissioned to mark the anniversary. The patch was a combination of designs contributed by Scouts Blake Abraham and Jackson Allworth.
Troop 3 has many exciting plans to celebrate its 90th year. The Scouts will be participating in a Camporee at West Point in early May and a bicycle trip on Nantucket on Memorial Day weekend. The summer will feature the troop's 90th annual trip to Camp Wanocksett in Jaffrey, N.H., followed by 25 Scouts and adults heading down to the newest BSA National High Adventure Base at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia in July.
There are several other community-focused events planned as well.
