FITCHBURG -- Guests will be transported back to the days of American Bandstand and the rockin' music of the '50s and '60s when they attend Monty Tech's 27th annual Superintendent's Scholarship Dinner.
The gala event, the school's major scholarship fundraiser, is sponsored by the Monty Tech Foundation and will be held Wednesday, April 2, in the school. Last year, the foundation awarded nearly $30,000 in scholarships.
A multi-course gourmet dinner, prepared and served by students and teachers/chefs in the culinary arts program, will begin at 6 p.m. A social hour at 5 p.m. will kickoff the evening's festivities.
For months, students and teachers in many of the school's career and technical programs have been busy working on projects and displays, which will bring to life many of the sights and sounds that evoke the rock n' roll era.
Students in the drafting and industrial technology programs are designing and making posters, bulletin boards, signage and storefronts and other decorations, which will bring guests back to a simpler time in our country's history.
The social hour will feature offerings such as sushi and raw bars, smoked chicken breast, pate de foie gras, garlic and herb lamb chops, citrus-curried salmon crostini, and pear, gorgonzola and bacon flatbread.
For dinner, guests will dine on caprese salad, green apple grilled petite filet mignon with port-wine demi-glaze, cauliflower puree, asiago cheese potatoes and baby vegetables, along with truffled lobster pot pie with spring vegetables,
Each guest will receive a unique "thank-you" gift, designed and crafted by students and teachers in the cabinetmaking program. To date, students have made and boxed close to 400 items, which will not be revealed until students present them that evening.
The event will include a silent and live auction. Many gifts items have been donated by Monty Tech supporters as well as handcrafted by students in the school's career and technical programs.
On display that evening will be a Shaker-style, solid cherry-wood dining room set, custom-crafted by cabinetmaking sophomores. The set includes a table, six side chairs and a buffet/hutch. A reproduction of a set crafted by Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers of Auburn, Maine, the set is valued at approximately $12,000.
Tickets for the dining-room set will be available that evening and by calling Monty Tech's main office at 978-345-9200. The drawing will be held Friday, May 2.
Dinner tickets, which are $150 per person or $1,200 for a table of eight, and $1,500 for a table of 10, may be obtained by calling 978-345-9200, ext. 5206.
