Several Groton students who attend Applewild School in Fitchburg received recognition at the National History Day west and central regional finals held March 1 at Quabbin High School in Barre.

All eighth-graders at Applewild School participate, creating projects in a variety of group and individual formats including websites, documentaries, exhibits and performances.

The theme of this year's competition was "Rights and Responsibilities in History." The projects must meet specific rules and guidelines and must be accompanied by a process paper and a thorough annotated bibliography.

Eighty-three percent of Applewild eighth-graders earned recognition for their work this year.

All first- and second-place winners move on to the state level competition on April 5 at Stoneham High School.
