On Monday, Feb. 3, first and second graders at HES began the Houses in Literature Project. For the next four weeks students will become architects and hone their design skills.
HES welcomes Jan Ham, from Learning By Design, to work with all first- and second-graders on a hands-on design-engineering process, connecting English Language Arts to activities in math, science, and visual arts.
Each first- and second-grade child will create his or her own architectural design based on literature. Students will read about houses and places in picture books and then use science, art and math skills to build scale-model people, homes, landscapes and neighborhoods based on the literature.
We thank the Massachusetts Cultural Council and our elected officials for awarding HES a STARS Residency grant and the Harvard Schools Trust for awarding us a grant. These grants make this tremendous experience possible for our first- and second-graders.
We are looking for parent volunteers on Feb. 13, 14, 24, 25 and 26 to help in the classrooms. We are also looking for one to three people who are willing to photograph the project at various points.
If you are interested in helping, please contact Pam Gordon at firstname.lastname@example.org.
