GROTON -- Lawrence Academy's Conant Gallery will display the colorful paintings of Richard Haynes Jr., beginning with an opening with the artist on Friday, Sept. 27, from 6-8 p.m.

Haynes is an African American artist who also serves as associate director of admissions for diversity at the University of New Hampshire. A strong advocate for social justice, he uses bold colors and faceless figures to present visual stories that both raise awareness and provoke unity.

Originally from South Carolina, the artist now resides in Portsmouth, N.H. He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam era and earned an MFA from Pratt Institute in 1979. His work can be previewed at www.haynesimages.com.

The public is welcome to enjoy the exhibit, which will be in place through Nov. 12. The Sept. 27 opening will feature refreshments and live music.

The Conant Gallery, located on the Lawrence Academy campus in Groton, is accessible by an entrance off of Route 40. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
