DEVENS -- Members of the armed forces, veterans, families, and area residents are all invited to Fort Devens Museum's annual Armed Forces Day open house on Saturday, May 18, at 94 Jackson Road, Devens.
The open house will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature some new displays, guest speakers on a variety of topics, and opportunities to talk with veterans and other visitors.
At 11 a.m., author and historian Michael G. Walling, from Hudson, Mass., will talk about his recent assignment in Afghanistan. He will recount his weeks with the servicemen and women he met as part of research for an upcoming book on U.S. military operations in Afghanistan. He served as an officer in the Coast Guard and has spent over 50 years collecting stories of the experiences of veterans and civilians in times of war.
At 12:30 p.m., CSM (retired) Timothy F. Casey, of Pepperell, will talk about both his own enlistment circumstances and his work with veterans. Casey enlisted underage, at 16, in the U.S. Army in 1957, and retired in 1982. He will talk about others like himself who joined the service before they were of legal age, and the services he has provided to those Americans who were prisoners of war during the Korean War.
At 2 p.m., we hope to have a panel discussion about growing up on or near Fort Devens. These vivid memories will offer a different perspective about life on a military installation.
This open house also features a raffle that includes tickets to a Lowell Spinners game, Devens Grill gift certificate, "50 Back" gift basket, Bull Run gift certificate and a museum gift basket. Tickets are currently available at the museum during regular museum hours. A local military collector will sell items including uniforms, field gear, patches and crests. These items date from WWII to the present and all proceeds will benefit the Fort Devens Museum.
Refreshments will be available throughout the day. This event is free and open to the public, though donations are always appreciated. The museum at 94 Jackson Road offers plenty of parking and is handicap accessible. Please call 978-772-1286 or email email@example.com for information.
