Eight seniors met in the quarter-finals Sept. 27 for a chance to be named "Best Senior Scrabble Player in the Region." The top two players will face the top two players from the North Middlesex Regional School District towns of Pepperell, Townsend and Ashby. At the Shirley Senior center, the Ayer-Shirley Regional District contests were close but four emerged victorious and will move on to the semifinal round. Jim Krycka and Janice Albert defeated Deb Towne and Missy Slattery, respectively. While Kate White squeeked by John King and Ruth Halloran edged Leslie Cady.

Eventual tournament winners move on to the finals on Oct. 11. This year's guest judges include Don Parker and Carl Mock, superintendent of the Ayer-Shirley Regional School District. Stop by and watch. We have others playing as well just to keep their minds active while they watch the other matches. This is fun, try it out.
