The first fall tour of the Shirley Shaker Village will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9.

Since the site of the historic village is part of the state correctional facility, special arrangements must be made for visiting. The guide from the Shirley Historical Society meets participants inside one of the restored Shaker buildings and gives an introductory talk on the architecture, music, handicrafts, and lifestyle of the believers known as Shakers, focusing on their community in Shirley.

Then the group walks up the road to see the location of the 1793 house and to go inside two other Shaker buildings from the early 19th century.

A minimum number of people must register in advance in order to hold the tour which costs $15 for non-members and $12 for Shirley Historical Society members.

Other tours will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23 and Oct. 14. Private tours can be arranged for groups of eight or more people.

Contact the Shirley Historical Society at 978-425-9328, or mail@shirleyhistory.org if you are interested in taking part.
