Fill the Boot: Devens Firefighters Local S-19 will hold its annual MDA "Fill the Boot" Drive from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. Devens Firefighters will be at all Devens entrances collecting for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

SATURDAY, JULY 21

Horse rescue open house: Lucky Horse Equine Rescue will hold volunteer open house & orientation from 3-5 p.m. at 185 Century Mill Road, Bolton. Refreshments will be served. LHER, a nonprofit volunteer organization, is dedicated to care of unwanted, abandoned, neglected or slaughter-bound horses by rehabilitation and placement in loving homes. LHER is located on the premises of Century Mill Stables in Bolton, which donates the stalls, turnouts, indoor/outdoor arena time and expertise that allow Lucky Horse to provide care to each and every horse. Since 2009, LHER has taken in over 120 animals in need. The open house will include intro to LHER and volunteering opportunities; assistance in completing the volunteer form and job matching right on the spot; volunteer orientation to cover safety, program and facility procedures; a walking

Electronic genealogical resources: Lori Lyn Price will discuss the electronic genealogical resources available through the Boston Public Library and some of the more popular resources that might be available through local libraries when she talks about "Genealogy in your pajamas: Putting your library card to use," at the July meeting of the Central Massachusetts Genealogical Society at the American Legion, 22 Elm St., Gardner, at 7 p.m. The public is invited. "Bats: Not Mice, Not Blind, and They Won't Fly into Your Hair": Nashua River Watershed Association invites the public to our free presentation on bats at 7 p.m., at the NRWA River Resource Center at 592 Main St., Groton. Our presenter will be Nathan Fuller, Ph.D. candidate at Boston University working under the direction of Thomas Kunz, the world's foremost expert on bats. Nathan will talk about the work of the BU lab which has been pioneering bat research for several decades, focusing on bat physiology, reproductive biology, thermal imaging and flight behavior and a new emerging fungal disease of bats known as white nose syndrome. Nathan will give a general overview of these topics, as well as "fun facts" and myths associated with nature's only flying mammal. This program is free and open to the public.
