LOWELL -- Textile artists Ann Lee and Elaine Perra Renault team up to show their work in Rhythm & Rhyme Pattern and Texture at the Loading Dock Gallery at Western Avenue Studios.
On view May 29-June 30, the show, say the artists in a press release, is "a metaphor both for the journey and the destination" as they work in textiles.
Lee has created Japanese Hippari-styled jackets for the show. Each jacket begins with a large rectangle of fabric pieced together from a variety of fabrics gleaned from her extensive collection. The rectangles become the body and sleeves of the jacket and are finished with thread embellishments. The jackets are made to be worn, but also can be displayed as wall art.
Sewing and designing fashions since her youth, Lee says working with textiles is immensely satisfying to her.
Perra works primarily with unprimed cotton quilt textiles that feature pre-stitch geometric shapes and abstract op art imagery.
The geometric stitched shapes create grids on which she paints other geometric and organic mosaic and pointillism-like paint layers with acrylic fabric paint, toothpicks, Q-tips and her fingers.
After completing the painting, she stretches and frames the canvas.
Both artists marvel at the rhythm and ebb and flow of their work.
"It's a steady push as you complete a section or idea, then back off to think about where to go next, then another push.
As artists, we strive for a rhythmic movement from one design element to another and a rhyming of repetitive elements that come back, again and again, in slightly different ways," they say.
An opening reception takes place Saturday, June 1, 5-7 p.m. in the LDG, 122 Western Ave., Lowell. Beginning June 1, the LDG will be open to the public Wednesday-Saturday, noon-5 p.m., and Sunday, noon-4 p.m.
