The chief of the Fire Department regrets to announce the passing of former Chief Wellman Parker, retired. Wellman was appointed to the Ayer Fire Department on July 1, 1954, rising through the ranks to lieutenant on Jan. 1, 1963; captain on April 6, 1966; and deputy chief Jan. 1, 1973. Wellman was appointed chief of department on Sept. 6, 1988, and served in that capacity until his retirement on July 1, 1992. Parker also served the town of Ayer for many years as electrical inspector and held the position of emergency management director from 1988 through 2010.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, March 21, at the The T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Road, Ayer. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ayer.

Calling hours are 3-7 Wednesday, March 20.
