Font ResizeHARVARD -- Scott Hayward, of Hayward Company LLC, and Chris George, an acquisition specialist who heads his own firm in Worcester, appeared before selectmen Tuesday night with a document in hand that Hayward said would determine the outcome of his current plans to purchase the General Store.
The document was a copy of the liquor license issued to the current owners of the General Store a couple of years ago, allowing them to add a package store selling beer and wine to the establishment.
Along with a request to transfer the license to the new owner, selectmen, after some discussion with the applicant, approved several amendments he had made.
For example, they agreed to adjust some conditions originally placed on the license, including restrictions on where the alcoholic beverages the store sells may be checked out by customers.
In the original version, beer and wine could only be checked out on the second floor, where the package store is located, unless a customer was disabled and couldn't climb the stairs.
Now, customers will be able to make alcohol purchases downstairs, too.
Another requested change selectmen approved clarifies age limits and supervision for store clerks, who must be at least 18 years old to ring up alcohol sales and supervised by a 21-year-old employee or the manager.
Rules for wine tastings are even more stringent. Eighteen-year-olds may serve customers at the events, with both supervision and a tipping
In addition, there will always be someone at least 21 years of age in the store when its open, Hayward said.
One more change was also approved. New Sunday hours will be noon to 7 p.m.
