DEVENS -- Saint-Gobain SA, a French-based building-materials company with operations in Worcester, is taking about half the space available at the now-vacant Evergreen Solar factory on Barnum Road, bringing with it 90 jobs, according to several reports.
The move is part of an expansion of Saint-Gobain's Central Massachusetts operations, which also include Northboro and Milford, site owners told the Worcester Business Journal, adding that the company planned to add 90 jobs to make a component of light-emitting diodes for its Crystals division.
William Manley, president of Hudson-based Calare Properties, a co-owner of the 448,000-square-foot building, told the Journal that Saint-Gobain "was looking for a premiere property with significant, high-capacity infrastructure. The building was a perfect fit."
The Lowell Sun is reporting on Wednesday that Saint-Gobain has been approved for $1.7 million in tax breaks.
The deal was part of $31 million in state and local tax breaks approved Tuesday by the Economic Assistance Coordinating Council, involving 10 firms.
Saint-Gobain, which employs about 2,000 people in Central Massachusetts, plans to use the Evergreen factory to make a component of light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. The company plans to create 90 jobs and invest $31 million in the facility.
