AYER -- After 49 years on Park Street, Cumberland Farms is closing its location in Ayer this June.

Cumberland Farms spokesman Derek Beckwith confirmed that the branch will be closing. He noted that the store's lease expires on June 30, and offered no other explanation for the close.

"The employees have been informed and we're working with them to accommodate them," he said, adding that the company will see if the employees can be transferred to other store locations.

But something new might take its place at 64 Park St. Geoffrey Hemenway, who owns the small mall, said he is in negotiations with someone looking at the space. He declined to go into further details, but said he should know more within a week.

If interested, he said, the new tenant will not move in until at least July or August.

Hemenway's Rosewood Avenue, LLC owns the strip of 60 to 70 Park St., according to the town assessor's office.

The part of the building where Cumberland is located was built in 1959, Hemenway said. The rest of the strip was built in 1964.

Hemenway said the chain has been a good tenant. The store had previously been in a different part of the strip mall before moving to where it is now, he said.
