FITCHBURG -- Workers' Credit Union has been named the top fundraiser for the 2013 Greater Gardner Relay for Life event.

Workers' Credit Union employees raised $32,328, which will go toward cancer research. Chere Piermarini of Fitchburg, a senior consumer lending specialist, was also recognized for raising $11,483 -- the most money raised individually out of all the teams that participated. In addition, Workers' was the number one team for online fundraising efforts.

According to Judy Griffin, co-captain of Workers' Credit Union's Relay for Life team, nearly 50 employees and their families participated in the walk. "We collected pledges, conducted raffles and sold household items. It was an incredible team effort that made this possible," she said.

Greater Gardner Relay for Life, held in June at Mount Wachusett Community College, is a 24-hour walk dedicated to funding cancer research, and is one of the largest relay events in the country.

Workers' Credit Union, founded in 1914, is headquartered in Fitchburg. With assets of $1 billion, the credit union serves over 72,000 members from fifteen offices in Acton, Chelmsford, Fitchburg, Gardner, Groton, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, Orange, Townsend and Workers' Online at workerscu.com.
