CLINTON -- Nypro Inc. says it's looking to expand, and an undisclosed spot in Devens is among the possibilities, according to a published report.

According to the Worcester Business Journal, Nypro is eyeing at least three Central Massachusetts sites for a "major expansion" that would include adding about 100 jobs. The plastics maker and contract manufacturer is looking for a 200,000-square-foot satellite manufacturing facility, and it is unable to expand by more than 20,000 square feet at its Clinton headquarters.

"We're full in Clinton, and we have some contracts that require some growth," spokesman Al Cotton told the Worcester Business Journal.

Cotton said all three of the potential expansion locations are near Clinton, includng one in Devens, about 13 miles north.

He couldn't be reached for comment when contacted by The Sun.

Melissa Fetterhoff, president of the Nashoba Valley Chamber of Commerce, said she had heard Nypro was looking at real estate in Devens, and that the company had made an inquiry about joining the Chamber of Commerce.

"We'd love to have them here," she said. "We have a lot going on here with Saint-Gobain (moving into the old Evergreen Solar facility), Bristol-Myers (a large expansion) and Mount Wachusett (Community College) creating a manufacturing facilty. It's very exciting."

Devens, a former Army base that was closed in the mid-1990s, features 65 businesses, 21 nonprofits and 13 governmental entities that collectively employ more than 3,200 workers, according to the website of MassDevelopment, which is tasked with developing the community.

Nypro, which currently employs 800 workers, was acquired by Florida-based Jabil Circuit in July. The company employs more than 12,000 people worldwide.

Four years ago, Jabil Circuit closed a manufacturing plant in Billerica, putting about 315 people out of work. at the time, the company cited global economic woes for the move.

Nypro's annual sales are about $1.2 billion, with about two-thirds of that derived from health care and packaging.
