AYER -- Firefighters from several towns knocked down a fire at a mobile home at 11 Groton School Road that initially endangered a propane tank nearby.

Firefighters were called to the fire about 8:45 p.m., and found heavy fire coming from the home, according to Fire Department radio dispatches.

Firefighters were concerned about a propane tank at the rear of the home, but were able to keep the flames away from it until the bulk of the fire was reportedly knocked down about 9 p.m.

The cause remains under investigation.

There were no reported injuries, though firefighters were still trying to locate residents to confirm they are all unhurt.

Firefighters said in radio broadcasts that all residents were "believed to be out, but no one is accounted for at this time."

Officials at the scene did not immediately request the state Fire Marshal's Office, which is standard procedure if there are fatalities.

As of Wednesday night, crews from Ayer and several surrounding towns were still dousing hot spots.
