AYER -- A one-acre brush fire put the Ayer Fire Department to work on Labor Day. The cause of the fire remains under investigation according to Ayer Fire Chief Robert Pedrazzi.

The fire was "in an extremely difficult area to access," said Pedrazzi. The blaze was located "in a rocky area in between the Top of the Hill Farm (across the street from Nashoba Valley Medical Center) and the steel power lines off Washington Street" in an area also nicknamed by locals as "Porcupine Hill."

Fire crews from Shirley, Devens and Littleton were used to fight the blaze as well as the State Forestry department.

Pedrazzi says the fire danger has been high lately.

"Hopefully the rain will take care of that," said Pedrazzi of the daylong rains that took place on Tuesday.
