AYER -- The quorum-challenged Ayer Personnel Board failed to rally all three members Friday, Sept. 7. As a result, Chairwoman Kathleen O'Connor and member Brian Muldoon of the Finance Committee left when fellow member Lisa White did not appear.
There are two vacancies on the Personnel Board. Interested parties should send letters of interest and resumes to Town Administrator Robert Pontbriand at ta@ayer.ma.us.
The board is currently considering the reclassification request of Assistant Treasurer Melisa Doig. Doig has submitted to the selectmen a new job description she crafted to refashion her position into one of a Payroll/Benefits Manager.
It's a new post that Treasurer Stephanie Gintner states contends is not necessary for a town Ayer's size, especially after the regionalization of the schools into the Ayer-Shirley Regional School District in 2011. The Personnel Board is investigating how payroll and benefits are handled in other like-sized communities.
The board is also inquiring of the state Department of Revenue whether it may revise the Assistant Treasurer's post, since it's a position filled by appointment by the elected Treasurer, with approval needed by the Board of Selectmen. Doig states she was appointed by former Treasurer Tom Horgan in the 1980s.
The Personnel Board was scheduled to meet next on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m.
