SHIRLEY -- A motorist was injured in a head-on collision with a tree near the intersection of Townsend and Groton roads Tuesday about 5:30 a.m., according to the Fire and Police departments.
The 40-year-old Ayer woman who was driving was transported to Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer.
Firefighters rescued the woman.
"It hit it pretty much head on, we were able to pull the doors open without any hydraulic equipment," said Fire Capt. Joseph Hawthorne.
The truck was traveling on Townsend Road when it went off the road near Groton Road, also known as Route 225, he said.
The driver was wearing a seatbelt and the pickup truck's airbags deployed, he said.
It was raining at the time and it may have played a role in causing the accident, Hawthorne said.
