AYER -- We know it's hot and dry, but please help us conserve water by stopping unnecessary outdoor water usage. In accordance with Town of Ayer's Water Conservation Policy, a mandatory water ban is in effect on nonessential outside water use between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. from May 1 through Sept. 30.

Nonessential outdoor water uses include:

-- Irrigation of lawns via sprinklers or automatic irrigation system

-- Washing of vehicles, except In a commercial car wash or as necessary for operator safety

-- Washing of exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways or sidewalks, except as necessary to apply surface treatments such as paint, preservatives, stucco, pavement or cement.

Enforcement is as follows:

-- First violation: Violators shall be issued a written warning.

-- Second violation: Violators shall be issued a fine of $100.00.

-- Third violation: Violator's service shall be shut off and only restored when any previously issued fines are paid along with a $20 restoration fee.

All town employees are the enforcement agents authorized to implement the water ban. Please contact the DPW office at 978-772-8240 if you have any questions regarding the water ban.
