AYER -- Yes, the black bear is becoming a familiar sight in these parts. On Monday, June 18, Ayer police sent out a text-message alert to subscribers advising that there was a black bear meandering around the streets just north of the downtown area.
"There is a small bear roaming the neighborhood of Highland Ave," read the 5 a.m. alert. "DO NOT APPROACH if seen. Police are in the area. They will give instructions if necessary." There were no incidents reported with the bear causing any harm.
Catherine Coulter, wife of recent Ayer selectmen candidate Mark Coulter, said she saw the bear. On Monday, Mark Coulter said Catherine "walked out on our deck ... the black bear was staring at her as it dug at grape vines hanging in our yard."
"It slowly turned and walked away into the thicket behind the neighbor's house," said Coulter. "Catherine said it was a medium-size bear with a back as tall as the cooking surface of a gas grill and lengthwise just shy of the length of a gas grill."
