TOWNSEND -- After a year of work, Hawthorne Brook Middle School has new tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, thanks to Sterilite and a United States Tennis Association grant.
The tennis and basketball courts, which had been cracking, were surfaced and lined, and the beach volleyball court was added by Sterilite.
"They really took them from total disrepair," said Hawthorne Brook Assistant Principal Sandi Shepherd-Gay.
Sterilite offered to help with the project more than a year ago, and then waited for the USTA grant to come in so the project could be completed, Shepherd-Gay said.
Both the school and the Townsend Recreation Department will be using the courts for skill development and other programs.
The USTA grant provided $20,000 to pay for the surfacing and lining of the tennis courts.
Shepherd-Gay said applying for the USTA grant was the school's way of contributing to the project.
"As they were working on it and Sterilite was funding repairs, we asked if they could hold off on the final finishing to see if we could work with the USTA grant program so we could make a contribution to the project. We really wanted to contribute something to the project because its such a phenomenal resource that they've provide us with," Shepherd-Gay said.
Shepherd-Gay thanked the people at Sterilite for both their contributions in finishing the project.
"Sterilite was very generous and patient in allowing us the time to
At the Oct. 8 Board of Selectmen meeting, the board agreed to send a letter to Sterilite thanking the company for its generosity.
"We're very blessed to have a good neighbor like Sterilite, which has really improved the quality of life for residents of Townsend," said Selectman Colin McNabb.
Town Administrator Andrew Sheehan said both Sterilite's contributions and the USTA grant helped to bring the project to completion.
"It's a good example of tapping into disparate resources to get a long overdue project done," Sheehan said.
